About Acappella Design

a cappella - Singing (creating) without instrumental accompaniment.
It requires talent, skill and a lot of practice. It can be done solo or with a choir (team). It’s difficult to do and stay on key (task) and the results are always unique and beautiful.

Acappella Design specializes in the design, creation and installation of beautiful, functional mosaics. I create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. The majority of my work is in ceramic tile, but I also use glass, stones and found objects. I draw on nature in my designs and will design and install custom pieces that reflect my clients’ vision.

About the Artists

I am an honors graduate of the Burnley School of Professional Art, majoring in graphic design. My romance with mosaics began at the tender age of seven when I made my first mosaic ashtray.

A career as a graphic designer, art director and project manager perfected my skills for my other passion of remodeling houses. I have redesigned many homes focusing on beautiful tile in kitchens, baths, floors and fireplaces.

I am an avid gardener, perpetual designer, love to move walls and mosaic things. I collect tile, glass, pottery, rocks and cool stuff to incorporate into my work.

After years of collecting I decided to put my finds to good use creating mosaics. Creating something lasting and beautiful from cast-offs is very satisfying.

                 Gary Nelson

Gary is an accomplished watercolor painter drawing on nature and the beauty of the Northwest for his inspiration. For Gary, woodworking, creative and practical skills are a family tradition. He has built boats, cabinets, furniture and has remodeled many houses.

He collects wind-up alarm clocks and wooden skis, is a certified ski instructor and avid backpacker. He is also a lifetime member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters and directs the Graphic Design program at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington.

Gary provides both moral and physical support as well as bases, frames and mounting for my work. He and I enjoy working together and often collaborate on design and construction.

Acappella Studio

Gary and I share our spacious studio which has a huge wood burning fireplace, views of Lake Kathleen and an art library. His side is for painting and my side for mosaics, tile and what ever else I dream up.

Most of the studio furniture is either on wheels or light enough to move so we can reconfigure the space to accommodate a large project, hold a class or even have a party. It is the perfect artistic and creative environment to create unique and beautiful mosaics.

I am available to design beautiful mosaics for you.
If you have a project you would like to discuss, please contact me by phone or e-mail.
